Where to Stay in Milos, Greece

Last updated on February 17th, 2023

I’ve said it multiple times before, but Milos is one of my favorite Greece destinations.

Crystal-clear water, quaint fishing villages, delectable cuisine, and an unlimited number of esquisse sandy beaches makes Milos an exceptional place for couples, solo travelers, and families to visit.

After spending some time on the island and exploring all sides, I have my favorite spots. But there are so many beautiful places to stay here that there is something for everyone.

Although most people choose to stay in the three larger towns of Adamas, Plaka, and Pollonia, there are numerous other options.

This guide will talk you through all the villages so you can more easily decide where to stay in Milos. From budget hotels to luxury accommodations, I have you covered.

So, without further ado, here is where to stay in Milos, Greece.

Overview of Where to Stay in Milos

Milos travel guide

Best Time to Visit Milos

The best time to visit the Greek islands is between late May and late September. Milos is still a hidden gem but is quickly gaining in popularity. The months of May, June, and September will give you the least crowded experience.

Due to the impeccable weather, most people visit between July and August. As a result, these are the busiest times of the year with higher prices.

How Many Days to Spend in Milos

Between 3-5 days is a reasonable amount of time to spend in Milos. This gives you plenty of time to see all the villages and beautiful sites, and relax. There are over 70 beaches alone to explore here!

You could spend a week on Milos if you prefer. Although the island is small, there is much to do here. The restaurant scene alone is worth staying as long as you can.

Where to Stay in Milos - The Main Towns

Adamas

Best For: First Timers, Nightlife

Adamas is the port village of Milos located inside the bay. All ferries going to and from the island come through this port, which is why many people enjoy staying here. Not only is it convenient, but it is also the largest village on the island.

The town is full of picturesque, whitewashed buildings and squares full of shops and restaurants without outdoor seating.

It is also just off the harbor with views of the fishing boats and yachts docked near the beach.

Two of the beaches close to the city are Papikinou Beach and Lagada Beach. Papikinou is the most popular, great for sunbathing and swimming, and close to some beachside restaurants.

Adamas is home to several museums. One popular one is the Mining Museum, which is open from 10 am – 2 pm most days. Here you will learn about the island’s impressive archeological history.

Another museum in Adamas is the Ecclesiastical Museum which displays art pieces and jewelry.

Some of Milos’s most beautiful churches are also in the vicinity. The second oldest Orthodox Church in Milos, the Church of Agia Triada, is located here.

Most people love Adamas for the very reason that you can walk almost anywhere within the village.

There are a large variety of restaurants and late-night bars, as well as lots of little shops.

Another reason many people pick Adamas as their base is because it is close to the island’s center. Most main roads go through the town at all ends of the island.

Adamas is probably the most accessible place to get transportation. There is a large taxi hub in the village center and a handful of car and ATV rental companies within walking distance of the port.

If it is your first time in Milos or you want to be in the heart of everything, then Adamas is an excellent choice.

Pollonia

Best For: Great Restaurants, Relaxed Atmosphere

My favorite area is Pollonia, Milos. I think it is one of the best areas to say in Milos. Pollonia is on the island’s north side and around a 15-minute drive from the port.

Many people, including myself, love that it is not as busy or touristy as Adamas, but there is still lots to do. Most of all, some of the best restaurants are located here.

Pollonia’s beach is also a quiet, family-friendly beach with lots of soft sand and shallow water to swim in. Some of the restaurants even have lounge areas that you can rent.A few popular attractions are a short drive from the town. The Church of Saint Nicholas is one that is worth visiting while you are in Pollonia. Also, the Kostantakis Cave Winery is close by.

Pollonia is a beautiful place for both families with children and couples.

What I loved the most was that you had views of the water almost anywhere you went. Pollonia has a good selection of boutique hotels, vacation rentals, and small luxury resorts.

You can walk out your door and access the water and many restaurants. So if you are worried that they will close late here, don’t!

And best of all, you have spectacular sunset views if you grab an outdoor table for dinner.

Pollonia Accommodations

Plaka

Best For: Quiet Village, Proximity to Beaches

The picturesque hilltop village of Plaka is the capital of Milos. Sitting high up on a hill, you have some of the island’s best views, which is why many people like to come here.

Of the three main towns, Plaka is the quietest but still has some tremendous late-night spots.

The city was initially built to keep out intruders with a large fortification and castle in the middle.

Now, the charming town is full of little shops and delightful restaurants. Much of the fortification is gone, but the Venetian castle remains.

Other historical sights near Plaka include the Catacombs and the Ancient Theatre of Milos. In addition, many of the quaint fishing villages are less than a 10-minute drive from the town.

Tripiti

Best For: Great Views, Close to Historic Sites

Located near Plaka on the hill, the village of Tripiti is another beautiful town to visit. White windmills can spot the little village at the highest peak.
They are no longer used but have been renovated inside as vacation rentals.

Tripiti is an excellent place if you are looking for a small-town feel. Because of this, you will want to book your accommodations well in advance. There aren’t nearly as many here as in the larger towns.

Tripiti is a great place to say if you want to be close to the island’s historic sites. One of the most popular is the Ancient Roman Theater and Catacombs. The theater is free to visit, and guests can walk around inside. The views from here are spectacular!

Just a short walk down from the theater is the Milos Catacombs. For only €4, you can enter the chambers with a guide who you give you a quick tour of part of the complex. The Catacombs are one of Greece’s most important relics and an exciting place to explore. For example, the Venus de Milo statue is said to have been found here.

Another great place to visit nearby is the Church of Agios Nikolaos in the middle of the town.

Where to Stay in Milos - Fishing Villages

where to stay in Milos

Klima

Best For: Unique Rentals, Remote Location

Besides the three main villages, there are some other options. For example, if you are looking for a remote location, the fishing village of Klima has some unique rentals available just feet from the water.

The town is known for its long row of colorful boathouses. These boathouses were purposefully painted in bold colors so fishermen knew which one was theirs.

Now, most of them have been turned into vacation rentals for visitors to enjoy.

Klima is located close to Adamas inside the Bay. The village is tiny and takes only a few minutes to walk from one end to the next.

Besides a restaurant, there is not much in terms of facilities here. Most people come here for a quiet stay away from the hustle and bustle of the larger towns.

Since the village is small, you will most likely want your own transportation to get around the island.

Klima Accommodations

The Colorful Land House

The Colorful Land house is a top-rated vacation rental in Klima. The modern house has everything you need for a long stay in Milos. Guests can enjoy a second-story balcony, private parking, and an outdoor terrace. Best of all, the house comes with a large front door that opens just 10 feet from the sea.

Firopotamos

Best For: Unique Rentals, Remote Location

Firopotamos is another small fishing village, much like Klima. You can find a few boathouse rentals here, but they have no public amenities or restaurants.

The plus side of staying here over Klima is that it is nestled in a small bay with calmer waters for swimming.

Even smaller than Klima and with fewer amenities, this is the ultimate place to come if you truly want a quiet stay.

Most rentals also come with kitchens if you would rather cook meals yourself than go into the towns for dinner.

Firopotamos Accommodations

Vilos Suites Fyropotamos Beach

This luxury suite is perfect for a couple’s getaway for a private escape and unbelievable views. The suites have a beach area and private terrace and are literally just steps from the water. With a fully equipped kitchen, you don’t have to go anywhere if you choose!

Mandrakia

Best For: Authentic Feel, Right on the Water

Like the other small fishing villages, Mandrakia is best reached by car, ATV, or taxi. No bus system comes here.  The town is very small, with a church, restaurants, and a few homes.

The little fishing village is best known for its picturesque white and blue boathouse and famous restaurant, Medusa

Manrakia is a great place to stay if you want an authentic, quiet experience. Most accommodations here are full studies equipped with living rooms, kitchenettes, and outdoor areas.

Where to Stay in Milos - Beaches

best beaches in Milos

Sarakiniko

Best For: Luxury Hotels, Beach Lovers

Sarakiniko is one of the most popular beaches in Milos due to its unique rock formations. The turquoise waters, white rocks, and sandy strips of beach make this a top destination for visitors. The landscape attracts people throughout the day, but the afternoons get the busiest.

In order to beat the crowds, come either early in the morning or for sunset. Or better yet, stay near the beach at one of Sarakiniko’s luxury vacation rentals.

Since Sarakiniko does not have any amenities and limited public transportation, you will need to have your own car or ATV rental. The benefit of staying at Sarakiniko is access to the beach within walking distance from your hotel.

You are also close to other popular destinations such as Plaka, Mandrakia, and Adamas.

Cave Suites Milos

Paleochori

Best For: Luxury Hotels, Close to the Beach

Paleochuri Beach is another remote location; however, unlike the smaller fishing villages, it has luxury hotels with all the accommodations you could need. Best of all, you are near some of the best beaches in Milos.

Paleochuri Beach is one of the prettiest, in my opinion, with its red cliffs and soft sand. There is plenty of room to lay out in the sun and swim in the turquoise water.

Many higher-end hotels here also offer private plunge pools for guests for the ultimate luxurious getaway.

There are a couple of restaurants on the beach, and many hotels have dining options. Paleochuri is the perfect remote option, with all your needs met in one place.

How to Get to Milos

Milos can be accessed both by ferry and plane. The easiest way to access the island is by ferrying from islands such as Mykonos or Santorini or directly from Athens.

Take the Ferry

Since Milos is in the Cyclades, several ferry companies, such as SeaJets and Blue Star, offer daily routes.

The number of departures depends mainly on the time of year you plan to travel. During peak season, there are 2-3 departures each day.

When we visited in early June, there was only one available option. The best way to book your ferry is in advance, so you don’t risk seats selling out.

From Athens to Milos

Most ferries will leave the port of Piraeus in Athens and take you to Milos. The journey by fast ferry takes between 3.5 and 4 hours.

From Santorini to Milos

The ferry to Milos from Santorini is just over 2 hours. During the summer months, there are a couple of ferries available each day.

From Mykonos to Milos

Fast ferries from Mykonos to Milos take about 3 hours today, while regular ferries take almost double that amount. During the summer months, a couple of ferries are available each day.

Fly into Milos

The airport in Milos is small, but you can fly direct from Athens in about 40 minutes.

If you want to fly from another island, just know that you will most likely have a layover in Athens.

Even though islands like Santorini are extremely close, most airlines will make a pitstop in Athens before departing back to Milos.

If you are lucky, you may be able to find a direct flight from either Mykonos or Santorini.

How to Get Around Milos

The most popular way to get around Milos is by renting a car or ATV. Although the island is not very large, the beaches and villages are spread apart, and many destinations do not have public transportation available.

The port town of Adamas has a large number of rental companies available. Many of these will deliver your rental to your hotel, even if you are outside Adamas.

Scooter or ATV Rental

The roads here are pretty easy to navigate, and you can reach any destination in under 30 minutes.

ATVs are a fun way to explore the island and make reaching remote locations much easier. They are also a cheap form of transportation.

Adamas has several ATV rental companies, including Apollonas Sunshine, which we used. They will drop off and pick up your ATV at the location of your choice for no extra fee.

Before you book, check with your hotel concierge. Many will book the rentals for you!

Rent a Car

If you are not comfortable driving an ATV, a car rental is your best option. Car rentals are much more practical and less expensive than taking taxis everywhere and allow you the flexibility to stop anywhere.

Overall, Milos is an easy island to navigate with fairly quiet roads. There are some areas near the coast where you will find some narrow and steep winding roads. If you are not comfortable driving an ATV down these, then a car rental is your best bet.

Book a Rental Car for Milos

Boat Rentals and Tours

Renting a bot or joining a tour is one of the best things to do in Milos. Some of the most picturesque locations, such as the Kleftiko Caves, can only be accessed by boat.

Boat rentals start at about €175 for a half-day if you want to explore independently. Several boat tours offer lunch, snorkel gear, and time to explore if you prefer getting driven around.

Book a Boat Tour or Rental

Public Transportation

Milos has a bus system connecting some of the main towns, including Adamas, Pollonia, and Plaka. The nice thing about the system in Milos is that they run all day and into the night.

The bust system could be a good option for an inexpensive way to travel between the main towns. Buses do not access the smaller fishing areas and some of the most remote beaches.

Take a Taxi

Some hotels offer a shuttle to pick you up from the ferry port. Taxis are also available in the main towns and will drive you around for a fixed rate.

The town of Adamas has a large taxi hub where they are readily available. I do not recommend trying to find taxis anywhere else, though.

They are much more difficult to find and can be pricey. For example, a 15-minute drive from Adamas to Pollonia will cost around €25.

Conclusion

Milos is one of our favorite Greek islands and somewhere where we plan to visit again and again. Whether you want to be in the middle of the action or stay in a remote location, there is no shortage of options! From budget rentals to luxury hotels, there is a little bit for everyone on the island. Stayed somewhere that is not on the list? I’d love to hear about your experiences!
