Greece is an unbelievable country that everyone should visit. The sunshine, clear blue water, delicious food, and friendly people have made it a popular vacation spot. Greece is a large country with many interesting cities and islands to visit.

The hardest part about visiting Greece is learning how to navigate the country as the islands are pretty spread apart.

There are over 200 islands that are inhabited today with over 6,000 total through the Aegean and Ionian Seas. I have put together some of the most beautiful Greek islands to visit for your first few trips to Greece.

Milos | Beautiful Beaches and Quiet Towns

Milos is a volcanic island with over 70 beaches and beautiful dramatic coastlines. It is also part of the Cyclades and easily accessible by ferry from the mainland. The island is well-known as being home to the Venus de Milo statue, now in the Louvre museum in Paris.

What makes Milos unique from other Greek islands is the ever-changing landscape. One of Milos’ most stunning beaches is Sarakiniko with its white rock formations.

Another popular beach is Kleftiko which was once used as a pirate hideaway. Milos is the perfect place to come for a quiet getaway.

Places to stay in Milos:

  • Milos Breeze Boutique Hotel sits on top of a cliff in the town of Pollonia with views of the Aegean Sea. All rooms come with a balcony, with some having their own private pool and terrace.

Santorini | Honeymooners and Wine Lovers

Santorini is one of the most well-known Greek islands. People fall in love with the island because of its unique black-sand beaches, picturesque towns, and wineries.

Santorini is also famous for the large volcanic crater called the caldera. The views from the top are breathtaking and unique to the island.

The eruption also led to Santorini’s wines who’s grapes have flourished in the volcanic soil. The soil has also led to some one-of-a-kind dishes special to the island.

People also travel here for Santorini’s famous blue and white buildings in the town of Oia. Santorini is hands down one of the best Greek islands to visit.

Zakynthos | Nature Lovers and Excursions

Zakynthos is a lush green island with beautiful hills and deep blue water. The South part of the island is a nature preserve for endangered animals such as loggerhead turtles. Another turtle reserve is Marathonisi island

Some of the most beautiful areas of the island are the Blue Caves and Shipwreck Beach. Visitors can enjoy relaxing on the sand or taking boat tours of the island.

Zakynthos is the perfect place for nature lovers! Besides the magnificent coastline, Zakynthos Town is also worth exploring. The old Venetian town is a beautiful place to stay and explore.

Two of the most beautiful beaches in Crete are Sougia and Ligres. If you have time, take a stroll through Chania town. This charming village makes you feel like you have traveled back in time with its mansions, old churches, and marketplace.

Mykonos | Resorts and Nightlife

Mykonos is another famous island in the Cyclades. Visitors and celebrities flock to the island’s resorts each summer to be pampered at one of the many beach clubs around the island.

Mykonos has much more to offer than just the nightlife. The islands have several secluded beaches, magical sunset views, and cobblestoned alleys of Little Venice.

Like Santorini, Mykonos is home to the famous whitewashed buildings. I highly recommend staying a couple of nights in Mykonos.

While it is more expensive than most Greek islands, the restaurants here are delicious and the waterfront accommodations make for a romantic stay.

Places to stay in Mykonos:

  • Bluetopia Suites – This small Bed and Breakfast is right in Little Venice near the symbolic Windmills. The rooms are located right on the edge of the water with private waterfront balconies with views of the Aegean Sea right from their bedrooms.

Tinos is another of the best Greek islands to visit. This island is not as crowded as some of the others and is only a 20-minute ferry ride from Mykonos, so you could easily visit in one day.

Tinos is known for its hilltop villages, historic marble buildings, and fresh seafood. Some villages to explore include Pygros, Kardiani, and Ktikado.

The island is a perfect getaway from the crowds and a great way to experience Greece like a local.

Paros | Relaxing Beaches and Nightlife

Paros has become a popular tourist destination due to its mix of old architecture, nightlife, and adventurous activities. It is also easily accessible from Athens, Greece, and can easily be seen in one day.

The villages of Paros are full of luxurious bars and Greek taverns that draw in the party crowds at night. Other villages like Marpissa offer a more laid-back vibe.

The main reason people come here, however, is for the beautiful beaches. Santa Maria and Golden Beach are two of the most popular beaches on the island. Due to its location, Paros is the perfect place for water sports. 

Places to Stay in Paros:

Rhodes | Learning About Greek History

Rhodes is one of the most unique islands due to its untouched towns. Visiting makes you feel as if you have gone back in time.

For this reason, it is nicknamed “Knight’s island”. Rhodes Old Town is a medieval citadel with tall walls, a medieval castle, and stone alleyways. It is one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Make sure to visit the Acropolis of Lindos for views of the island’s slate cliffs and emerald coves.

Other places to explore on the island are the ancient ruins of Kamiros and the Palace of Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town. The beaches here are also stunning. Some of the best beaches include Lindos, Anthony Quinn, Kallithea, and St. Paul’s Bay.

Naxos is not as well known as other islands in the Cyclades, but it is just as beautiful. The island is full of lush valleys, mountains, and pristine beaches.

It is the perfect place for nature lovers and adventure seekers. There are also many historical areas on the island such as Portara, which remains of the ancient temple dedicated to Apollo.

Another historic landmark is the Venetian castle that sits above the town of Chora. If you are looking to explore the island, there are many opportunities for some windsurfing, hiking, and water sports around the island.

The beautiful coves around the island also make for nice snorkeling and swimming areas. Try stopping by Mikri Vigla and Agios Georgios beaches for some quiet relaxation. 

Places to Stay in Naxos:

  • Naxian on the Beach is just within steps of Plaka Beach. The hotel is perfect for beach lovers who want to relax and soak up the sun.
