The United States is full of magical cities oozing with history and charm. There are an infinite number of unique destinations. With a mix of landscapes and unique experiences, the south had plenty to offer. In my opinion,  you will find some of the most romantic getaways in the south.

This post outlines some of the most romantic and affordable weekend getaways in the south to help you get started. The south is home to a mix of romantic destinations and offers a wide range of experiences and activities.

Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, holiday, or need a quiet weekend getaway, these fabulous destinations are just what you need!

Romantic Getaways in Virginia

Alexandria

This historic town is located in the northern part of Virginia, just a quick drive to Washington D.C.

Each street is full of hundreds of years of history and lined with beautifully preserved 18th-century buildings. 

Old Town Alexandria is a bustling area with many boutiques, restaurants, and museums on the water. Take a romantic stroll along the Potomac River, bike down the Mount Vernon Trail, drive out to Mount Vernon, take a ride on the King Street Trolley, and go on an intimate river cruise. 

There is no shortage of romantic restaurants and bars here either. The river is lined with cozy spots like Ada’s on the River and Chart House.

Other romantic dinner spots include The Majestic, Bastille, and the Wharf.

Places to Stay in Alexandria

  • The Alexandrian Old Town Autograph Collection is in the heart of the Old Town and just steps from the waterfront. The Alexandrian is the person spot to walk to all the main restaurants and shops. 
  • The Morrison House Boutique Hotel is close to King Street and within walking distance to the waterfront. 
  • Kimpton Hotel & Spa: For the ultimate luxurious experience, visit the Kimpton. Guests have full access to the outdoor garden, terrace, and remarkable spa. The hotel also has a delicious french restaurant called Brabo. Make sure to check it out!
  • Hyatt Old Townis a modern hotel in Old Town Alexandria. It is near King Street and only a few minute’s walk from the metro station.  

Williamsburg

Williamsburg is the perfect romantic couples getaway. It is also one of the United State’s oldest and most historic towns full of museums, preserved colonial buildings, cozy restaurants, and fascinating history. 

Williamsburg is most romantic to visit during the fall when the leaves or changes or even in the winter months.

The town is beautifully decorated and gleaming with thousands of lights during the holidays. Visitors can enjoy live Christmas music, special celebrations, and holiday shops. 

Spend a night or two in Colonial Williamsburg with day trips to Jamestown and Yorktown.

Take some time to explore the Colonial Williamsburg Museum, stroll around Merchant Square, and dine at one of the town’s delicious restaurants. 

For a romantic night out, try a horse-drawn carriage ride followed by a pint at a cozy colonial pub or dinner at the Williamsburg Winery.

Le Yaca French Restaurant and The King’s Arms Tavern are highly recommended dinner spots. The King’s Arms Tavern even offers a romantic wine dinner for two during the holidays. 

Places to Stay in Williamsburg

  • The Williamsburg Inn is a must if you want the “colonial” experience. The Inn is impeccably decorated and offers a plethora of luxurious amenities.
  • The Williamsburg Lodge is another accommodation in the Colonial Williamsburg Resort Collection. The rooms have recently been renovated and modernly decorated. Guests receive additional perks such as shuttle service and access to the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. 
  • Wedmore Place is a European-style hotel located at the Williamsburg Winery. The small 28 room hotel is the perfect spot for a quiet and romantic experience with many fireplaces and cozy rooms.

Secluded Destinations in Virginia:

Shenandoah Valley

The 200,000 acre National Park is home to romantic waterfalls, spectacular wildlife, and lush forest. This beautiful destination is full of outdoor activities and is perfect for a quiet getaway.

The Shenandoah Valley is home to the extraordinary Luray Caverns and one of the top secluded romantic destinations in the US. 

Go on a hiking or kayaking adventure, and end your day at one of the valley’s quaint wineries. The Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail includes eight of Virginia’s best wineries. 

Some romantic accommodations include L’Auberge Provencale and Piney Hill Cottages. Both offer a variety of romantic couples packages and activities.

If you want something a little less remote, try the Georges Inn in Lexington. This beautiful historic Inn has 21 rooms and a delicious continental breakfast made with local ingredients. 

Romantic Getaways in North Carolina

Asheville

Asheville is a lively city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has become a popular destination due to its fast number of breweries and large art scene.

Enjoy a weekend exploring the city and checking out some of downtown Asheville’s famous brewers, or opt for a more secluded cabin in the mountains.

The Pisgah National Forest is a popular mountain destination with several hiking trails and cozy cabin rentals. 

Asheville is most famous for being home to the Biltmore Estate. This extravagant 19th-century estate was home to the Vanderbilt family, who opened it to visitors. Visitors can tour the castle, hike and wander the grounds, grab a bite at one of the local restaurants, and partake in some delicious wine tasting.

For the most romantic experience, try visiting during the holiday season when the entire grounds are decorated immaculately for Christmas. 

Places to Stay in Asheville

  • The Inn on Biltmore Estate sits on the property and is perfect for a luxurious getaway. You are within walking distance of the Biltmore mansion and have access to many amenities. 
  • Village Hotel is another option if you want to stay on the estate. The rooms here are cozy, and the hotel is within walking distance of the winery and Antler Village. 
  • The Windsor Boutique Hotel is located in downtown Asheville within walking distance of many breweries and restaurants. 
  • Omni Grove Park Inn – For a more quiet experience, the Omni Grove Park Inn is nestled in the mountains. The hotel has its own golf court, swimming pool, spa, and restaurant for guests to enjoy. 

Secluded Destinations in North Carolina:

Highlands

The Highlands is a small, luxurious mountain town in North Carolina, near the Nantahala National Forest. The Highlands is known for high-end shops, art galleries, antique stores, and charming restaurants.

The sleepy town also has terrific hiking trails ranging in length and difficulty.

Like everything else in the Highlands, the food is top-notch. Some most highly-rated restaurants are the Wine Garden, Wolfgang’s Restaurant and Wine Bistro, and Madison’s Restaurant.

There is no shortage of cozy inns and luxurious hotels here. Three of the most romantic places to stay are the Old Edwards Inn, White Birch Inn, and Skyline Lodge. You will be taken care of no matter where you choose to stay!

Romantic Getaways in South Carolina

Charleston

Charleston is one of my favorite U.S destinations to visit year-round. The city is full of southern charm and a wonderful place to learn about the south’s history. Charleston is also a popular place for weddings and romantic weekend getaways. 

History lovers can visit Fort Sumter, Boone Hall, Aiken-Rhett House, Drayton Hall, and Middleton Place. The downtown area has many attractions as well.

Book a carriage tour company that will take you around the Battery and surrounding areas in style.

Looking for some delicious food and a relaxing getaway? Charleston has some of the best seafood restaurants around. Hands down, the Darling is the best place to grab some oysters!

You really can’t go wrong with food in and around the downtown area. Both downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant have a plethora of amazing restaurants.

Charleston is also known for its high-end shopping on King Street and quiet beaches. Folly Beach is a popular beach just 30 minutes from the city.

If you want a more romantic experience, I highly recommend Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island. These two beaches are much quieter and lined with beautiful million-dollar beach homes. 

Places to Stay in Charleston

  • Francis Marion Hotel was opened in 1924 and beautifully restored in the 1990s. The hotel includes spacious suites, conference rooms, a restaurant, bar, spa, and ballrooms. 
  • Wentworth Mansion is a 19th-century mansion-turned boutique hotel with 21 elegantly decorated rooms. 
  • The Spectator Hotel is known for its stunning 1920s decors, making you feel as if you have stepped back to Prohibition times. Whether you decide to stay here or not, make sure to stop by their bar for some of the most creative cocktails around. 
  • Zero George Street is a small hotel made from restored 1800s carriage houses. Guests can enjoy drinks and dinner in the courtyard and relax on the beautiful southern porch.

Secluded Destinations in South Carolina:

Kiawah and Seabrook Islands are two terrific destinations close to Charleston that offer a more secluded experience. 

Kiawah Island

Kiawah has gained popularity over the last few years for its exclusiveness and pristine gold club, The Governor Club. The 11-square-mile island is gated and preserved by the Kiawah Habitat Conservancy. 

Guests on the island can enjoy over 30 miles of biking trails, natural parks, private and public beaches, and club amenities.

Seabrook Island

Seabrook is a lesser-known island located just 30 minutes from Charleston. ​​It is a little more residential than Kiawah and also much smaller. 

The island has a large number of vacation rentals that you can purchase year-round. Seabrook Island is also home to a large equestrian center and Seabrook Island Club.

Romantic Getaways in Georgia

Savannah

Coming in as the top romantic getaway in Georgia is the city of Savannah. This historic city needs to introduction.

Savannah is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the south. With its tree-lined oak trees, beautifully kept squares, and 19th-century homes, this is about as romantic as it gets. 

There is no shortage of things to explore in Savannah. For a more romantic experience, the Historic District is the area of Savannah I recommend you try. Here you will find some trendy rooftop bars and delicious restaurants. There is no shortage of delicious and unique places here. 

Other great things to do are tour the historic homes, visit Forsyth Park and other lush city squares, and take a stroll down River Street. River Street is the more touristy part of the city, full of restaurants and tourist shops. It is worth checking out if you have never been before! 

Places to Stay in Savannah

  • Eliza Thompson House is a cozy historic inn built in 1847. This adult-only accommodation is perfectly located near Forsyth Park and within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants. 
  • The Mansion on Forsyth Park is a 19th-century mansion-turned hotel. Like many places in Savannah, the hotel has a spooky history. It is a very cozy place to stay with a spa, bar, restaurant, and pool.
  • The Cotton Sail is an old cotton mill that was turned into a small 56 bedroom property. It is located right on the river and has a popular rooftop bar with spectacular views.
  • The Kimpton Brice Hotel is a contemporary hotel just outside the downtown area. Guests have access to a variety of amenities, including complimentary bikes.

Secluded Destinations in Georgia:

Want a more secluded destination? The Blue Ridge Mountains are perfect for a quiet getaway. The mountain range spans the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Some of the best cabins are outside of Asheville, NC, and in the town of Blue Ridge, GA.

Blue Ridge

Blue Ridge is a cozy little mountain town in northern Georgia. There is plenty here to do in terms of outdoor activities.

Hike one of many trails to a waterfall with a picnic, go on a horseback riding adventure, and wander the streets of the bustling town. When the day is over, relax in your log cabin with serene views of the mountains.

Dahlonega

Another secluded mountain getaway is Dahlonega. This small town in the Georgia mountains was first known for its involvement in the gold rush.

Now, Dahlonega is known as a filming location for many Hallmark movies.

The little town has many charming shops selling local products and cozy little restaurants for a quiet meal. One of the main things to do in Dahlonega is to tour the surrounding wineries. My personal favorite is the Montaluce winery which is designed to look like a Tuscan villa.

If you want to spend the night, some great places like The Smith House.

Romantic Getaways in Tennessee

Memphis

Memphis, Tennessee is a top destination for music and art lovers. Beale Street is one of the city’s top attractions. Here you will find a variety of shops and restaurants.

Memphis is also home to the Brooks Museum of Art and Botanical Gardens. For a romantic outdoor excursion, pack a lunch and have a picnic in the 100-acre gardens.

Another terrific thing to do in Memphis includes taking a river cruise on the Mississippi River. and climb to the Peabody Rooftop with views of the city

At night, take a stroll along the Riverbluff Walk or catch a show at the Orpheum Theater. Visit historic Beale Street for dinner and drinks afterward. Try the Peabody Hotel rooftop at night for sunset views of the city. On Thursday nights, the rooftop bar has live music and other events.

Places to Stay in Memphis

  • Peabody Memphis is famously known as being home to a family of ducks that swim in the fountain lobby each day. But there is much more to this hotel than that. Traditionally furnished with a lavish lobby and lounge, the Peabody is perfect for a romantic stay. They even offer an assortment of romance packages to be added to your room.
  • Big Cypress Lodge is a luxury accommodation that makes you feel like you are in a secluded cabin in the woods. For a romantic night in, check out the third-floor bar and lounge.
  • River Inn of Harbor Town is the smaller of the three accommodations and is another highly-rated Memphis hotel. Ask for a room overlooking the river and enjoy a delicious dinner at Paullette’s and a complimentary breakfast during your stay.

Romantic Getaways in Louisiana

New Orleans

For a fast-paced getaway, New Orleans has lots to offer. This beautiful french city is steeped in history and known for delicious creole food. 

The two most popular places in New Orleans include the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. Here you will find no shortage of cozy jazz bars, famous restaurants, and beautiful french inspired buildings. 

Some more romantic activities include taking a trolley ride around the city, watching some live music at a cozy jazz club, and taking a nighttime stroll around the French Quarter. 

Places to stay in New Orleans

  • Henry Howard Hotel is a beautiful 1867 mansion-turned hotel located in the Garden District.
  • Maison de la Luz is a luxury hotel with elegant decor. The hotel offers wine and cheese each night and breakfast buffets each day. Enjoy drinks at the Bar Marilou, which you find through a secret bookcase in the guest salon.
  • The Pontchartrain Hotel is an elegant hotel located just outside the French Quarter. Whether you stay at the hotel or not, make sure to take the hotel’s rooftop bar, Hot Tin, for spectacular views of the city.

Romantic Getaways in Florida

St. Augustine

The old historic downtown area of St. Augustine makes for a perfect romantic getaway in the south. Founded back in 1565, you will still find many preserved buildings and narrow streets of the original settlement.

The town is full of galleries, museums, and boutiques to explore and has no shortage of historical activities.

The charming cobblestone St. George Street is where the best restaurants and shops are found.

Other must-see historic attractions include the Castillo de San Marcos and the Colonial Quarter.

If you enjoy the outdoors, relax on St. Augustine Beach and explore the Anastasia State Park. The park has bike and kayak rentals available to explore the 1,600-acre wildlife preserve.

For a romantic date night start off with drinks at the San Sebastian Winery, followed by dinner at the cozy Collage Restaurant.

Other great romantic activities for your weekend getaway could be chartering a private sailboat or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride.

There is no shortage of activities in this beautiful southern city!

Places to Stay in St. Augustine

  • The Carriage Way Inn is a cozy bed and breakfast near the city center. This beautiful Victorian-style home is for guests 21 years and above and has a variety of traditionally decorated rooms.
  • St. George Inn is located right on St. George Street in the heart of the city. With only 25 rooms, this accommodation is perfect for a couple looking for a quiet stay with still being within walking distance of the main attractions and restaurants.
  • The Casa Monica Resort & Spa is the perfect place for an all-inclusive and luxurious stay. The 1888 building is lavishly decorated and offers all the amenities you could want.

Secluded Destinations in Florida:

Islamorada

Islamorada is a small island in the Florida Keys. This tropical destination has plenty of sandy beaches, romantic resorts, and water activities.

Take a boat tour around the island and get up close and personal with the marine life on a snorkel excursion.

There is also plenty of reefs where you can dive close by and marine refuges. Once you finish exploring the area, eat some fresh seafood at Chef Michael’s or visit Morada Bay for dinner on the beach with a sunset view and live music.

Sanibel Island

Only 15 miles in length, Sanibel Island is the perfect secluded getaway in Florida for nature lovers.

The island is full of outdoor adventures at every turn. With 25-miles of bike paths, 6,000 acres of wildlife preserve, and some of the prettiest shell beaches in Florida, there is no shortage of things to do here.

Best of all, there are some luxurious all-inclusive resorts on the island. If you are looking for the ultimate romantic getaway, try the 23-acre Casa Ybel Resort.

Romantic Getaways in Alabama

Mobile

First established in 1702, Mobile is the oldest city in the state. This small port town is full of history and beautiful French architecture.

Even if you are not a history buff, it is hard not to appreciate these buildings. Dauphin Street is the historic section of the city. It was named after the King of France’s son during Mobile’s establishment. Dauphin Street is where the majority of the beautiful Victorian homes are found.

One main reason people visit Mobile each year is to celebrate Mardi Gras. Even though most people think of New Orleans for this celebration, it actually started here.

Every year the town goes all out for the celebration. If you have ever wanted to experience Mardi Gras, Mobile is the place to do it. You will have just as much fun, but with a lot fewer crowds.

For a leisurely day, head over to the 65-acre Bellingrath Gardens and explore the grounds.

Another popular activity could be taking a river cruise around the bay or listening to live music at one of the many cozy downtown bars. Callaghan’s Irish Social Club is the perfect date night location. Finally, end your night at Bienville Square for a late-night stroll around the picturesque fountain. If you are lucky, you will find some live street performers there.

Places to Stay in Mobile

  • The Kate Shepard House B&B is the oldest bed and breakfast in the city. The beautiful Victorian house has luxuriously furnished rooms to choose from. The Kate Shepard House also has a cozy little library for you to enjoy a quiet night with a complimentary port.
  • The Battle House is a luxury hotel in the heart of downtown. Choose between several rooms and spacious suites and enjoy dinner at the three hotel restaurants. End your night at the hotel’s Royal Street Tavern with some piano music and cocktails.
  • The Malaga Inn is another boutique hotel built back in the 1860s. The charming 39 room Inn is only minutes from Mobile Bay and within walking distance of popular attractions. Guests can choose between historic rooms, suites, or courtyard rooms, all uniquely decorated. The owners even offer tours of the house, including the hidden tunnels said to hide Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.

Romantic Getaways in Mississippi

Oxford

This small southern town is located just over an hour from Memphis, Tennessee. Named after Oxford, England, the town was established in 1837 and is home to the well-known University of Mississippi.

Oxford revolves around “the square,” a delightful place with no shortage of museums, shops, restaurants, and galleries.

For book lovers, no trip is complete without a visit to Square Books. Here you will find a vast collection of new and traditional books. From there, tour the wonderful Rowan Oak house turned museum and take a stroll around the 44-acre grounds.

For a romantic night out, visit the Lyric Theatre or Proud Larry’s for some live music, followed by a drink (or two) at the Library.

Places to Stay in Oxford

  • The Graduate is located right on The Square. The perfect location for those looking to explore the shops and restaurants in the area. Looking for a cozy night in? The lobby contains a library filled with thousands of books and a cozy bar.
  • The Chancellor’s House is another wonderful hotel near The Square. This modern hotel offers a bed & breakfast package and is pet friendly. The Chancellor’s House also has a cozy library where you can relax near the fire, a rooftop terrace, and a private tea room.
  • Castle Hill Resort is perfect for a more intimate experience. This beautiful colonial-inspired bed and breakfast doubles as a popular wedding and events venue. Castle Hill is the perfect romantic getaway decorated with crystal chandeliers, an elegant ballroom, and traditionally decorated rooms.
