Coming from an Italian family, I know the amount of pride and love Italians put into food. For this reason, Italian food is some of the best in the world!

Italy is known for its traditional cuisine made with fresh ingredients that are locally grown. Italian food can be carb-heavy, so make sure to throw in plenty of salads and fresh greens to help balance your diet. 

No trip to Italy is complete without having a taste of some of the country’s traditional foods. Though I could go on about all the amazing meals I’ve had over the years, I have put together a list of the best Italian foods to try in Italy.

Espresso

Espresso is a type of strong coffee commonly drunk in Italy. Only a little bit of boiling water is combined with the ground bean, making for a stronger and more potent drink.

Many Italians like to drink espresso straight, but it can be added to other drinks for an added caffeine kick. 

Aperol Spritz

Aperol Spritz is a refreshing drink that many like to drink during the summertime. This simple cocktail is made by combining the Orange Aperol liquor, prosecco, and a splash of club soda over ice.

Finally, it is garnished with a slice of orange. If you visit Italy in the summer you will probably see many people sitting around during the day sipping on this orange-flavored drink.

Bruschetta

Bruschetta has been around since the 15 century and remains a popular appetizer or antipasti as they say in Italy. The dish consists of a grilled bread that is lightly coated with olive oil and topped with a tomato mixture.

Usually, basil, garlic, salt, and paper are added to the chopped tomatoes before being put on the bread. Some places in Italy will drizzle balsamic reduction on top. 

Panzanella

This light salad is perfect for having as either an antipasto or side dish. The dish consists of stale bread, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil. Like many other Italian salads, the dressing is simply olive oil and balsamic vinegar. 

Focaccia

Focaccia is a delicious Italian flatbread seasoned with herbs such as rosemary. Depending on the region, it is made slightly different and can be studded with cheese. It is popular to serve with antipasti, on its own, or as a side dish. 

Caprese Salad

Caprese salad is a light and tasty dish. It is simple to make with only two main ingredients of buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes. The mozzarella is sliced thin and put on top of the slices of tomato.

Then, olive oil, salt, and pepper are put on top. Finally, the dish is garnished with fresh basil. This is a wonderful summer dish that is so good you could eat it as a complete meal.

Arancini

Arancini is one of my favorite dishes. They are balls of rice stuffed with mozzarella, covered in breadcrumbs and egg yolk, and then deep-fried until golden.

You can add vegetables and meats to the rice as well. Arancini is a traditional Sicilian dish, however, you can find them all over Italy. Several great Arancini restaurants in Rome serve them up as street food on the go!

Italian Pasta Dishes

Truffles

Truffles are a mushroom that is grown underground in certain regions. They are extremely hard to find and therefore are pretty expensive to buy making them a delicacy.

There are two types of truffle, the rare white truffle, and the black truffle which is a little more common. They are, however, absolutely delicious! Truffles are found in most Italian restaurants as part of pasta dishes. 

Bolognese

Bolognese is a tomato sauce and meat pasta. It is one of the most widely consumed Italian dishes and easy to make. Tomatoes, minced beef or pork, onions, and celery are combined to make the sauce.

The meat-based sauce is then poured over pasta and served. Traditionally tagliatelle pasta is used, but many people use spaghetti as well.

Pesto 

Pesto was originally created in Genoa, Italy. This delicious sauce is perfect for light pasta. To make pesto, you mix basil, pine nuts, garlic, salt, olive oil, and parmesan cheese until it becomes almost a paste.

Pesto recipes do vary based on region and may use other types of cheese or nuts. I have also seen spinach used, however, brazil is the traditional way to make homemade pesto.

Pesto is normally added to pasta, though I love making Caprese sandwiches with it as well. 

Gnocchi

Unlike other pasta, gnocchi is made with a potato base. The potatoes are boiled and then mashed together with flour and cheese. Some recipes even add an egg for extra richness.

The dough is then worked together into long ropes which are cut into inch-long pieces that are then put in boiling water to cook. Many people eat gnocchi with a tomato sauce, but pesto is another good way to enjoy them.  

Cacio e Pepe

This Roman pasta dish consists mostly of cheese and pepper, aka its name. The cheese that you need to use is Pecorino Romano cheese which is mixed cracked black pepper.

Many recipes today add butter to the recipe as well, however, that is not the traditional way to make the sauce.

Instead, the cheese and pepper are combined with the cooked pasta and a little pasta water. The boiling pasta water mixes with the cheese and helps coat the pasta.

This is one dish that will never be as good as in an Italian restaurant, and one you must try when you visit Italy. 

Carbonara

Another delicious dish is pasta carbonara. There is much debate as to the origination of the dish, but everyone can agree that it is worth the calories.

The recipe is made with cured pork, Pecorino Romano/ Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, and black pepper. The secret ingredient to this rich dish is the addition of eggs.

The eggs create a creamy coating to the spaghetti and give the dish its beautiful color. 

Eggplant Parmesan

One of the most delicious vegetarian dishes, eggplant is my favorite dish and one that I grew up eating.

It is a pretty labor-intensive dish to make because not only do you have to salt the eggplants to extract the bitterness, they also have to be fried.

First, the eggplant is sliced thin and set outside covered in salt for at least an hour and a half to sweat out the bitterness. From there, the slices are covered in a flour mixture and lightly fried in oil.

Many recipes say to bake the eggplant, but trust me frying is much better. Once the eggplant is fried, they are layered with tomato sauce and lots of parmesan cheese before being baked in the oven. 

Lasagna

This wonderful Italian dish is pretty labor-intensive to make and is also easily varied. The main ingredients of any lasagna are the sheets of pasta, tomato sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella cheese.

The fillings can be easily changed. Most lasagnas are made with ground meat, but spinach and ricotta pasta is also extremely delicious. 

Ravioli

Ravioli is a great comfort dish and is traditionally made by hand. The pasta dough is made from scratch and rolled out into thin sheets. The sheets of dough are cut into rectangular pieces that are filled with different types of fillings.

Some popular fillings are spinach and ricotta, three cheese, mushroom, and when in Italy, truffles!

Tortellini

Tortellini is another stuffed pasta. Like ravioli, it can have different types of fillings, but tortellini is much smaller and has a very different shape.

Most tortellini is filled with either meat and cheese or a combination of cheeses. Tortellini can be served in sauce like pasta, or in broth as a soup. 

Risotto

Risotto is a creamy rice dish that has been served both in Italy and other countries for hundreds of years. White wine, broth, and parmesan cheese are slowly added to the Arborio rice to create a thick consistency.

There are so many variations of additional ingredients added to the dish, but my favorite is mushrooms. The dish can be served as either a first course or a side dish, but it can also be eaten as the main course. 

Meat and Main Dishes

Pizza Margherita

This delicious pizza originated from Naples. It is my favorite type of pizza, one of the most popular Italian foods on this list. The pizza was made in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy with toppings to mimic the Italian flag.

The three main ingredients are tomato, basil, and mozzarella. They stand for the red, green, and white colors of the flag. Though there are few ingredients, this pizza is packed with loads of flavor. 

Minestrone

Minestrone is an old, traditional soup recipe. The tomato-based soup is filled with different vegetables and even pasta or potatoes.

This recipe has been around for generations and was a staple in many households because it allowed families to use up any vegetables they had on hand.

Some great vegetables to add to your soup are spinach, squash, carrots, onions, and zucchini.

Prosciutto

Prosciutto is a salty cured ham that varies in how it’s made depending on the region. The most delicious prosciutto is said to come from Parma.

Prosciutto is used in lots of Italian dishes. It can be eaten in a sandwich, added to pizza and pasta, or served as an antipasto. 

Steak Florentine

Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Steak Florentine) is a popular meat dish in Florence and the surrounding Tuscan region.

The large piece of T-Bone steak is aged and then cooked very quickly so that it is rare inside. The portion is very large and can be shared between at least 2 people.

Just a heads-up, this type of steak is only cooked rare. You will insult the cook if you ask for it to be cooked longer. 

Mortadella

Mortadella is somewhat like bologna, but with a gentler and smoother taste. The meat is made from cured pork, pork fat, black peppers, and pistachios. It is then most commonly sliced thin and added to sandwiches or as part of a charcuterie board. 

Italian Desserts

Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a decadent Italian dessert and my ultimate favorite. It means “pick me up” due to the large amounts of coffee used. The dish is primarily made from biscuits soaked in coffee and then layered. In between the layers of biscuits is mascarpone cream.

Lots of people then like to sprinkle chocolate powder on top for an elegant look. Many people have had tiramisu before, but trust me, it is not the same. You need to travel to Italy for the real stuff. 

Affogato

This simple dessert starts with two scoops of vanilla gelato that are covered in hot espresso. Some places will add shots of liquor as well. All that is left to do is enjoy!

Cannoli

The Sicilian pastry is made from a pastry dough wrapped around a tube mold to create its shape and then deep-fried. This may sound easy, but making and frying the pastry is an art that takes lots of practice.

Once the dough cools, it is filled with a ricotta and chocolate chip filling. There are many other types of fillings that you can try as well such as pistachio and chocolate. 

Gelato

Gelato is such a delicious dessert we ate it almost every night during our travels to Italy. Gelato is similar to ice cream, however has less cream and is turned slower to give it a thicker consistency.

Some of the best gelato flavors are the traditional lemon and stracciatella, but hazelnut is my personal favorite. 

Panettone

This sweet bread is a traditional holiday dessert that we always had on our dinner table during Christmas time. It is a sweet bread that contains different types of candied fruits like raisins and oranges.

Other European countries also have their variation of this dessert. The best way to enjoy the bread is after dinner with a warm cup of coffee. 

Tartufo

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with truffles. This is an ice cream dessert that is formed into a ball and covered in a chocolate shell.

Normally, you will find vanilla ice cream inside the shell and fruit such as a frozen cherry as the center. Sometimes the ice cream is covered in chocolate powder instead of the hard shell, which is my preferred way of eating it. 

Torrone

Torrone is a type of nougat made from egg whites, honey, sugar, and types of nuts such as toasted almonds. This sweet treat is traditionally made during important holidays, especially Christmas.
